words from Mike Giant

in regards to my post the other day that featured more rip offs from REBEL8 - i guess they were contacted by the company designer (Zach) for 'Tank Theory' who was responsible for the "rip".

He stated that, “Tank Theory DOES NOT bite shit. We are not your average streetwear/recycling program. We have prided ourselves on original graphic artworks on t-shirts since 2001. That’s what we do. We are not a “lifestyle” brand. We are not a “streetwear” brand. And we don’t look to other brands in the industry for “inspiration.”

The shirt:

Mike wrote this to clarify...

“First off, their graphic is full color. REBEL8 doesn’t fuck with color schemes like that.

Second, it references an old painting, not any of my drawings. In the case of the aviator girl, or any other bite you’ve posted, the biter stole from my work directly, usually just tracing it and adding slight modifications. I haven’t drawn anything that looks just like that Tank Theory graphic. And even if they actually did reference two of my drawings to create a new one, it’s still a new one. I don’t count that as a bite. If that’s the case, I’m the supreme biter because I regularly reference work from the entire history of art and reconfigure it to fit my needs.

Third, the linework in their graphic is flat and uniform. Not like mine at all.”

Does that make sense?

personally, i still think that it is a bite - it's just a bite of a bite. maybe the graphic isn't ripped off straight up but the idea of a religious icon holding a gun is a pretty played out graphic. i've literally seen a company straight rip Mike's graphic off - no modifications and seen a company trace over the line-drawing, changing minor things, and adding the worst looking bandana over the character's face. it is my opinion that if someone sees a bad rip off - they should tell the respected brand - not to be a narc but it should be taken personally b/c you should fully respect and support the brands YOU choose to support. i would want everyone to do the same for me...

what do YOU think?!
